Great question! When it comes to achieving your goals, facing your fears and escaping your comfort zone, I believe you must confront the most important story of all: the story you tell yourself about why you aren’t capable, ready or deserving of having everything you desire (including a healthy and fit body).
As a result of my own personal transformation journey, I now take tremendous pride in helping each and every one of my clients identify and let go of the ‘stories’ that no longer serve them. Although I was able to attain a stage-worthy physique and a six back of abs, I seemed to always gain back the weight.
Eventually, I got tired of this and knew I had to go much deeper. I realized I had
to go much deeper. I realized I had to embody the person I wanted to become in order to make a lasting change.
Ready to let go and peel back those layers so you can start living your best life in the body you deserve?
Ok. Let’s do this!
I’D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO MY 3-STEP SYSTEM:
When I attended journalism school — many moons ago —
I was taught how to construct a story using the ‘inverted pyramid’ structure.
When creating a news story, the most important details are always placed at the beginning
and the least important information is placed at the bottom.
The reason being: if the editor needs to cut the word length, the story still makes sense to the reader.
Today, I use this exact same concept when coaching my clients on their
own transformation journey.
Let me guess, this isn’t the first time you’ve attempted to achieve a health and fitness goal, right?
If this is the case, trust me when I say you’re not alone. And you’ve definitely come to the right place!
Although I was a certified personal trainer who understood how to lift weights, elevate my heart rate and run a marathon in less than five hours, my health and physique were nowhere near where I wanted them to be. At the age of 30, I desperately wanted to see my abs. The funny thing about this is that they were there all along, hidden layers deep beneath my fear of
failure, fear of not being good enough and what I believed to be poor genetics.
Thankfully, my “A Ha” moment eventually arrived on my doorstep. In fact, I can still recall the day I decided I had enough. I knew it was time to let go of these limiting beliefs and stories that were allowing me to feel safe and play small.
So instead of telling myself “I can’t”, I started to say “What if?”
Once I let go of the stories of not being good enough, worthy or capable of achieving my goals, all aspects of my life began to change. In fact, every new, healthy habit I integrated had a ripple effect into other areas of my life, including my relationships and career. For the first time in my life, I actually saw what was possible for myself.
Once I learned how to arm myself with the right mindset and belief system, I could focus on my goals and dreams. One by one, I began to shed the unhealthy layers of fear, perfectionist tendencies and self-doubt that were holding me back from becoming my “best self”.
Perhaps you can relate? Do you have a goal you want to achieve yet something is standing in your way?
It’s likely time for you to change your story and eliminate the old set of beliefs that are no longer serving you.
In this step, you need to become crystal clear on what you want to achieve and the reason why it’s important to you. All you require is an ounce of belief and the willingness to work harder on yourself than anything else. When you stop stressing about the day to day tasks of life and start to imagine your best future self, you will be inspired and ready to take your life to the next level.
I can recall a time when I would turn to candy or cake as comfort when I didn’t feel worthy, happy, confident, good enough, capable or in control. On the surface, I didn’t realize this was going on. In fact, I think my unhealthy eating habits eventually became common practice (similar to brushing my teeth).
Can you relate to this? Do you have good intentions, yet somehow you seem to sabotage yourself?
Please trust me when I say you’re not alone.
Once you learn to let go of limiting beliefs and old programming, you will have a much easier time staying on track. So instead of saying, “I can’t eat that”, you will begin to say “I don’t want to eat that.”
At the time of my own personal transformation, I was inspired by the images on the cover a fitness magazine. This prompted me to set an outrageous goal to step on stage in a fitness competition. I can remember I was highly addicted to sugar; particularly Swedish Berries and vanilla cake (with lots of icing!) However, I knew there would be no way I would reach my goal with these guilty pleasures in my life.
Just so you know, I still love these “trigger” foods. I just know that I can’t be around them as my goals mean a lot more to me than the 30-second sugar high they provide. Plus I no longer feel good when I eat these foods in excessive amounts.
After just two weeks of clean eating, I lost eight pounds along with my addiction to sugar. So how did this happen? At the time, I didn’t have the right mindset in place, so I had to rely on willpower to get there. Basically, my coach told me I couldn’t have any sugar for 14 days (including fruit). If I cheated, she said I would have to start the detox all over again. With her help,
I stuck to it. And I was shocked by what happened to my body and cravings.
At some point during my transformation I had to take a step back and revisit my stories and beliefs. In fact, it has become regular practice and work. You will never fully delete your past thoughts, beliefs or stories. They will come creeping back from time to time, depending on what’s happening in your life. Just know it’s ok to go back to step 1 at any time. This is your life and your journey.
Therefore, my first piece of advice is to do the stuff you love.
Find the activities that bring joy to your day.
Personally, I learned to fall in love with the process. When I started to gain muscle and I could do full pushups, I felt empowered, fit and strong. I stopped focusing on the pain and started to appreciate the benefits. In fact, the gym has become my happy place. When I miss a workout,
I feel off.
Did you know movement or exercise is one of the best ways to improve your mental state? Here’s a tip: whenever you’re dealing with negative emotions, try going for a walk outside. You will be amazed by how quickly your mood improves.
When exercise becomes “a must” instead of “a should”, you will know you’re on the right track.
And it’s totally ok if you don’t always love it. I can assure you, I’ve never met a leg day that I’ve enjoyed. Truth be told, it really hurts! But is it worth it? Absolutely. I wouldn’t trade this feeling for anything else in the world.
Once you start to move your body on a regular basis, the aches and pains will disappear, your confidence will soar and you will fall in love with how your body looks and feels. You will appreciate all that your body can do for you. And you will become the best of friends.
When you take care of your ‘self’ first, you tend to show up for life in a whole new way.
